"Black Friday does away with the middleman -- in the universe of holidays, it is the only one that exists solely to sell merchandise. It celebrates nothing; it commemorates only itself. It is an annual festival of the cash register."

Mexico has its own shopping holiday equivalent to Black Friday called "El Buen Fin", promoted by the Mexican government. However, according to a study, "75 percent of all 'deals' offered to customers during last year's Buen Fin weekend did not correspond to items whose price was reduced. Instead, the deals were offered on items sold on credit to customers, who were given the chance to pay back in several months." This has some people concerned about people using credit to buy things they can't afford.

"Two women going toe-to-toe in the children’s department at Walmart. It was a winner-take-all, Black Friday battle royale for the undisputed possession of... a cute pair of Hello Kitty pajamas. 'It was a pretty good tussle,' recalled Brimfield Police Chief David Oliver. 'I'm not going to kid ya. I was a little shocked when I got to the center of the crowd and at the bottom of the pile was two females and below them was a pair of Hello Kitty pajamas.'"

"The National Retail Federation predicts holiday sales will increase 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion. Actual holiday sales in 2011 grew 5.6 percent, better than the 10-year average annual growth rate of 3.5 percent. ... To prepare for the potential uptick in sales, retailers are expected to hire between 585,000 and 625,000 seasonal workers this holiday season, comparable to the 607,500 seasonal employees they hired last year."
