Who does Black Friday "right"?

stacykay4 wrote:Our Walmart is just nuts. The big ticket items are fine because they have their own lines. But the pallets with the dvds are just nuts. You can be standing there for 30-45 minutes before the unwrapping, and as the time approaches everyone starts cramming forward. They don't even give the associate the space to cut the wrapping off. Then, Hello, you are smashed forward with hands, legs, everything flying everywhere. The tv on dvd seasons fly off, but all of the other dvds do not. If everyone just chilled a bit, there is plenty to go around. Even at 2 pm, they are still there.

I hate when you get stuck and can't even move in the aisles. Wish they would find a better place for all of the pallets. It's so frustrating to be at a standstill, especially with all those carts. I usually use the basket, but after reading many use the reusable bags, I'm going to give that a try this year.

I agree! Keep the racetrack ( the main aisles) open just for pallets and push back dept merchandise a little for traffic. In soft lines mainly. Those flimsy little tiered shelves fall over and shirts fly everywhere when people are shoving around. When the doorbusters are over then put out the showcase merch on the racetrack and pull everything to the front.

My Wal-mart is a bit stricter than others. Sometimes you will see someone with something they hid in their cart. Sometimes they get away with it, and sometimes they do not. I don't think I've ever seen anyone be escorted out for it. Usually, they just have to put it back and are watched a little more afterwards in order to make sure that they don't do it anymore. Most of the time the pallets aren't open until its time. However in year's past the sale has started about 5 to 10 minutes early. Overall, I like going to Wal-mart best. Here in Indiana the weather is often times very fickle. One year it won't be very cold, and the next, you are freezing your buns off. LOL. So, I choose Wal-mart. :D

Whoohoo another Hoosier! LOL. I hate to say it (knocks on wood) but its gonna be another cold one this year. Last year wasn't too bad though compared to the year prior when it was sleeting. I don't mind snow, sleet on the other hand is something I could do without while standing outside.

Our Walmart does the same with keeping ticketed items in the food areas. I will not be getting any big items like tvs or computers this year. I am looking to get a Nook tablet, so that will be my "big ticket" item. Oh yeah, and a smart phone. I will just do my best this year as far as getting other items with the pallet fiasco. A friend of mine told me that she shops at a Walmart a few miles away from where she and I live, so I may go there with her this year because she said it's not usually overly crowded like the ones near us.

I have gone to walmart the last few years. When they have there midnight opening I will go about 10:00 pull everything off the shelves and get everything I'm price matching then stand and wait to check out. A couple years ago they had the Nintendo DS on sale for 99 instead of waiting in line I just pulled it off the shelf. They say they have to have a special code on them but if it's in there ad they have to give it to you for that price because it doesn't specify in the ad only specific ones just make sure you grab the exact thing that is in the ad.

My main problem with how Walmart does their sale isn't that they allow people to get items, its the lack of knowledge throughout. If it's specific items there just for BF, some employees will allow you to grab one and go, but not check out. Others will not. More than once I've not been able to get some items because I have to decide to wait in line for an item they won't allow you to grab & go. Then there is the whole if the customers rip the black wrap open, then sometimes employees will stop it and then some people have items while others don't. Which just creates serious anger and animosity. I live in a pretty small town with mostly laid back people and there were 2 fights last year because customers opened a pallet and were walking around with items and the employees wouldn't let anyone else take any.

Not allowing any access to the doorbusters is easier and safer and more fair, IMO.

That's why i don't go to walmart on bf. It's just chaos which is cool, but not when there are selective behaviors.

Home Depot does it right! They serve us hot coffee while waiting in line,,,,,,, and every year everybody lines up at one enterance door and they always open the other entrance door first, so as I am in the back of the line I am always closer to the other door they open first! But the day before I plan out where the item is located that I want so I go there first!
They had these folding ladders worth $200+ for $59,,, but they used a bait and switch where the more expensive ladders in a rack covering up the ladder that I wanted for $59,,,, there were 20 people there grabbing the WRONG ladder,,, I was the only one that seemed to know what was the correct one on sale,,,, but there was only 3 left, got one!
This is great! When I was standing in line at the checkout lane I noticed everybody was also in line holding the wrong ladder that wasn't on sale, a woman in front of me had a wrong ladder and was fighting at the girl at the register cause she got the wrong one,,,, the girl at the register then pointed to me saying I had the correct ladder that was on sale, that woman went crazy, first she tried to grab the ladder off me, I didn't give, then she asked me where i found it at,,, I told her, none are left,,,, before she even completed her sale she ran off to find that ladd
I didn't expect to have fun,,,but it was fun!

This experience changed me! Now I just go to the black friday sales just to have fun,,, I really didn't want or need that item on sale,,, I just want to get it just to make everybody else mad that they didn't get it.. and i rub it in by showing off that item and bragging about it,,, later in the day I will take it back and return it,,,,,,,,, I know,,,, you hate me! I just want to have fun, some excitement!

@ bankruptinpa

LOL- you killed me when you wrote that she tried to grab it off you- LOL- some people do seem to just go stark, raving mad and it's so funny, so long as they don't get physically violent.

This year, lots of stores started doing it wrong. Multiple "doorbusters" at different times of the day after the store has already been open for hours. Gimme a break.

i'm not unintelligent, or a new online shopper. but i am SICK of online shopping after trying to figure out deals.

stores trying to manufacture the best profit and showing a higher retail therefore better savings is corrupt

Line everyone up around the store and let them duke it out for the big TVs

Usually I shop at WM and have a great experience and spend lots of $$$. This year "someone" changed the way they do BF at my WM. OK so usually the less wanted items you can get early. Then walk around - shop & pick up other things that were not on the list spending more $$. This year ALL sale items were guarded by 2 to 4 WM employees and they would not let anything be opened early. Then to make it worse, the front aisle with the registers was blocked off with only one access point - that being the middle aisle. That middle aisle only had one access point from the back of the store through the toys and electronics (Whose briliant idea was that). The way they made it unaccessable was to push up all the rackes together and then the aisles were taped off with at least 2 guards so you could not duck under either. It was like leading the cattle to slaughter and in my opinion a fire hazzard.

I would have walked out except my sister was buying me a gas grill for xmas. They gave out tickets & we only had to pay for it then drive around out back to pick it up. So, i positioned myself near the middle aisle which is were the cheap towels were and when the sale started I grabbed some of those & then wormed my way to the checkout. It was the craziest & stupidest thing I have ever see. If my WM continues to do it this way I will be shopping elsewhere on BF.

Entertaining thread for any year. I'd like to climb a perch and record the craziness in a year when I'm not shopping. The LP's must have a ton of fun reviewing their CCTV feeds when they're not looking for shoplifters. Willing to bet they change out the RW discs or HD's just to archive the madness.

As for this year's ad the first and second events are close together and require multiple checkouts if you really want an event 2 item. Color coding the ad so people can organize their plans and brains is helpful. The 1HGC receipt and related tasks can get complex in a hurry, but no other store has been willing to offer that guarantee.
