2008 shopping season predictions

Postby jwheeler » Fri Nov 14, 2008 11:31 am

Feel free to post any articles about predictions for Black Friday and/or the 2008 shopping season.

I found this one that makes me think I'll wait until mid december to do my big electronics shopping instead of waiting in lines on BF.

That article seems awfully optimistic compared to what we've seen in the ads so far. The big Sears TV seems to be the hot item among some people, while at the same time trashed by others. And beyond that, I haven't seen any deals that people are going crazy for.

I would like to see this come to reality...I mean with a quote like this:

"According to its leaked Black Friday ad, Sears will discount TVs heavily, selling a Sharp 46-inch 1080p LCD HDTV for $899 as an early-bird special, about $500 cheaper than a few weeks ago."

No offense, but that is not really that super by BF standards - we have gotten 50% or more in the past - even last year!

As for the Blu-rays, she is correct about that - we have seen it already with disks being cheap and the players under $200.00

Almost seems like, with the economy, and retailers knowing that people want or even "need" to get a HDTV, they will purposely bring the prices low, but not super low so they can still make a better profit.

Only time will tell.

Last years BF was awful to me. It just felt so flat and I didn't get that awesome rush. It looks like this year is going to be the same. I am starting to understand it now (what makes a good one and what makes a bad one). Not sure what to do. :?

I predict that I will be saving a lot of money this BF. Maybe I'll take the savings and make a payment on our Disney trip for next year....
After all this time? Always...

Third and the motion sadly is entered into the books as a lackluster BF year.

I probably mentioned this last year, but I think that the "good old days" of Black Friday are a thing of the past. I think that it's no longer as much fun for shoppers, and it's also no longer as effective for retailers.

But, here are two conflicting reports:
- Black Friday and Cyber Monday Sales Are Projected to Grow 1.2% and 2.4% Respectively This Year
- Black Friday outlook dim
