Would you be interested in a refurbished one? Those go cheaper, and since a 7-year old is 99.999999% likely to drop (or even throw) the system, its relatively low cost compared to a new one might not be a bad choice. They also carry a 1-year warranty if you buy it direct from Nintendo, which is nice:

Limited Warranty (at the bottom of the page)
Nintendo systems, including Authentic Refurbished systems, carry a standard 12-month warranty, which is one of the longest standard warranties in the video game industry. Games and accessories sold separately carry a three-month warranty. The warranty covers any manufacturing or workmanship defects and these will be repaired at no charge. [Learn More]

The link above has all the video games by item. So if you also want to add a few game.

Recommended Games for Kids:
Overcooked 2 (great co-op family game) - $29.99 at Best Buy
Lego Games
Just Dance 2019
Kirby Star Allies
Rocket League

Pre-teens
Skyrim (Elder Scrolls V)
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
Mario + Rabbits in the Mushroom Kingdom

Adults only:
South Park The Fractured But Whole

Also, Given the switch has a lot of good indie titles that you can download, I have to recommend getting a MicroSD card. The bare minimum should be one labeled "Switch" 64 GB, however; I would actually recommend the 128GB SanDisk Ultra Plus card.

Awesome spreadsheet, this is VERY helpful. Thank you so much.

You're welcome. I will try and keep it up to date.

That might be a good idea, since now he says he thinks Super Mario Maker looks lame, so he doesn't want that one. Ugh. I hate video games. Too confusing.

Then I would honestly just get the Switch from Best Buy and get their extended warranty. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/geek-squad ... 0100050010

 We could probably get a Switch without any more presents, but an extra $200 for an extended warranty? $450???  Maybe if we don't pay a few bills this Dec. We are probably going to get him the 2DS XL since the lid closes and ask for a few games from the relatives. That way we can still get him a few Pokemon things.
