camera shopping tips

Postby bls » Wed Oct 06, 2010 1:16 pm

Looking to buy a Canon T2i / 18-55mm lens kit, and possibly a Canon S95 as well. Both in high demand, and rarely on sale far below their retail prices ($899 and $399, respectively).

Could get either one (or both) this weekend @BestBuy @ 10% off.

Anyone want to venture a guess at the BlackFriday prices on these two? I'm basically wondering if the BB-10% is the best I could possibly do this year. The S95 in particular only became available in September.

I would hold off for HHGregg. They'll be cheaper and plus match BB's 10%.

They are both at the suggested retail prices, but with the coupons they would be around $810 for the T2i and $360 for the S95.

Also, moments after I typed the original question, I got a price alert email saying that the S95 was $360 at 6Ave.com too.

I'm trying to remember how prices shook out for the T1i last year. If I remember correctly, the T1i held its price pretty steadily around $799 till the fall, and BestBuy had it for $699 on Black Friday. But the T2i has had shortages this year and I skeptical that we would expect a discount like we saw for the T1i.

Hmm, sounds interesting. But would HHGregg match a limited-time coupon from another vendor when they have a lower starting price?

HHGregg's current price is $849.99 (vs $899.99 - 10% @BB). HHGregg isn't going to take BestBuy's 10% their $849, are they?

HHGregg's Price Match policy

Postby bls » Wed Oct 06, 2010 3:14 pm

Yeah, looks like HHGregg's 110% Price Match Guarantee doesn't apply to prices that are lower due to coupons (note the "limited offers" stuff).

http://www.hhgregg.com/policy.asp?#pricing

hhgregg's In-Store 110% Price Guarantee

hhgregg absolutely guarantees that you won't find a lower price on the products we sell. If for some reason you find a lower price from a competitor's local store on the same in-stock model, we'll honor their price plus give you 10% of the difference - on the spot. It's simple - just bring us proof of the lower price at the time of your purchase or within thirty days after you purchase from us. Our 110% price guarantee does not apply when the competitor's price includes free or bonus offers, financing, delivery, installation or rebate offers, nor on one-of-a-kind, packaged or limited offers, internet pricing or products purchased online at www.hhgregg.com.

T2i Camera AND Lens is $787 (you could get this and have an extra body since this is the body AND lens!)

The S95 is $379

You can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon. I personally prefer Nikon.

Thanks. I generally shy away from places whose prices are suspiciously low. A lot of photo enthusiasts like to check Reseller Ratings to check out shops they've never heard of, and by that metric these guys aren't doing so hot:

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/shopdigitalcorp
lifetime rating: 3.45 / 10

Central Digital looks better, but BestBuy - 10% is still better:

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/central_digital
lifetime rating: 7.83 / 10

Probably hitting BB this weekend....

I'd agree with that advice. Though obviously I lean towards Canon personally.

Not sure which would be best specifically for ease of uploading.

I have this camera- http://amzn.com/B001OMI29Y

It takes great pictures, HD video, and has several shooting modes. I got it 2 years ago when it cost over $200 and I haven't had any problems with it.

I am also in the market for a T2i this year. I havent been really searching for deals as of yet, I have seen a few pop up, but these are usually packages with a photo printer, a bag, and some gummi bears, and have coupons/rebates to make them a deal.

Last year costco had a deal on the T1i in a package, with the 18-55 kit lens, canon bag, a memory card, and an additional 55-250mm IS lens. I dont recall the exact price right now, but I know it was either $100 or $150 over the normal body/kit lens price. This was an great deal with that IS lens thrown in, as alone it retails for $300. They have not had the T2i come up like this yet, but I am hoping they do.

Even right now, BB has the T2i with the 18-55 kit lens and the 55-250 IS for $1000, so you are getting the additional lens for only $100 more.

There are some packages on canon dslr's with an additional 75-300mm lens, but this is not an IS lens. yes, the focal length is longer than the 250mm one, but at 18mp, who cares, just crop it. besides, I dont think I would want to be using 300mm without IS anyway.

Since we're on the topic...I'm looking for a decent DSLR this year as well. I'd prefer Canon or Nikon, but I haven't really started doing my research yet. I need something that's quick (fast moving children!) and at least 10mp.

I really don't want to spend more than $5-600. I'm somewhat new to the DSLR world, so does anyone have any suggestions on what to look into?
