Item/Cart Stealing in Store!?!?

Postby HoundAbound » Wed Nov 18, 2009 5:48 pm

:? Okay, here's one that I have "unfortunately" had happen to me on more than one occasion and it really ticks me off every time it happens....
Mobbed store on BF and you HAVE to take your eyes off your cart for a moment or two to grab something off a shelf...or worse yet, you have to leave the cart for a second to two-hand grab something off a larger pyramid of stuff, you get going and you get that funny feeling that something on your cart is missing...YOU THEN REALIZE some (alternate name for Richard) grabbed a BF item off your cart!!!!!
I still can't come up with a sure fire solution to this~~
   Any suggestions or tips that WON'T land me in jail

In the store, grab some towels or other items that can be used to cover up and hide your purchases. Keep the good stuff at the bottom of the cart, so they'll have to dig if they want to steal your stuff.

I suppose you could bring black plastic trash bags into the store. Pop your purchases into the bag and leave them there until its time to check out.

I always bury my "most prized items" on the very bottom covered up with clothes or anything really that way no one really digs into mycart to get my items!! Some hings its kinda hard to hide so you just have to do your best and give no one the chance to take anything!!

I agree that this DOES happen. I recommend not going alone, I'm going with my mom, dad and boyfriend. But sticking with my boyfriend mostly since were both interested in buying the same items. If you're trying to get an item or busy looking at stuff, have someone else watch your cart. No offense, but I wouldn't even get a cart, get one of those baskets (unless you have heavy stuff) and hold on to it for your dear life. My boyfriend and I are planning on grabbing stuff and carrying it/ using a basket. Carts are always in the way and cause more jam traffic in the store anyways. If someone really tries to take off the items from your cart, I would go straight to the security or have a beat down!!!

If I ever had someone try to take my shit out of my cart, I wouldn't go down without a fight.

The first thing that'd come out of my mouth would be a very loud, "BACK THE EFF UP," and then I would proceed to yank my shit out of their hand and yell for security.

I will not be letting my cart out of my site. My 14 yr old brother is coming with me and he's gonna be my quick little runner for things I can't get. :-)

No one else grabs a wheeled trash can with a lid??? That is what I normally do. My mom will have a cart for the price matching stuff (or my son who is asleep) and I grab one of the big trash cans with wheels or a hamper with wheels and a lid. After I get my stuff, I either buy the trash can/hamper or transfer my stuff to a cart and return it to it's rightful place. I too have had an item stolen from my cart. Last year a woman tried taking an Air Hogs thing out of my cart and my son shot up and scared the pants off of her. She quickly withdrew her hand from my item. The trash cans are usually easier to get through with.

I've got a horror story for you all... I went shopping on BF when I was pregnant and showing pretty good. I'd got all the things I came in for and was standing in line for layaway (this was at WM) when I noticed more care bears on the shelf next to me. I turned away from my cart for less than 10 seconds and the next thing I know, I see this guy running off with my cart, which had my purse in it (no cash or CC though, those were "hidden" on me). So I start yelling and carrying on and WM actually locked their doors and posted an employee at every entrance til the guy was caught. He was escorted somewhere until the police could get there, and I was ushered, with my cart, to the front of the layaway line. Needless to say, I pressed charges, and the scumbag had to pay me restitution, which covered everything I bought for the holidays that year.

Then, about 4 years ago at the same WM, I got mugged in the parking lot! That's when I stopped going to that particular WM on BF. I now go to one further up the road.

Lesson Learned: Do not do BF when you can't run after cart thieves and be suspicious of everyone in the parking lot, you never know who will try to steal your things!

By "shot up" do you mean that your son was hidden in the bottom of the cart and erupted from underneath the pile of sale items concealing him, like an alien bursting forth from the victim's stomach in a fusillade of blood and glory? Or, did you mean that he simply ran up to the cart?

My sister in law and I have 1 firm rule. Never use a cart. Too cumbersome too hard to move around too easy to get things taken from. Of course this means we never buy more than we can carry.

 Wow...great and funny answers and suggestions...I thank you ALL!
The rolling rubbermaid garbage can is something I can really get into...should hold all the little to middle stuff vertically and much easier to roll through the crowds...not to mention a lid that snaps on...imagine how many dvds would load into that
I did try the jacket cover some BF's ago, and the "in-store" shoplifter actually threw my jacket on the floor to take the Kodak I had hidden under stuff while I was rolling a bike back to my cart....I did have some crazy thoughts after that of actually riding the child-sized bike through the melee yelling wild accusations to find the crook, but I was too damned tired :(
