Is black Friday camp out dying?

Postby Russell Burrows » Sat Nov 16, 2019 7:35 pm

I used to camp out every year at best buy 1st in line year after year.
This year it was a few clicks at online Amazon and best buy and shopping done.

The reason is it was cheaper and less hassle for me.

Do you still camp out? Or do you feel camp outs for black Friday are a dying tradition?
Thanks .

Camping out at Best Buy, is like Linus camping out in the pumpkin patch, waiting for the great pumpkin

Sad to say, Black Friday has changed quite a bit in the last couple of years. With Sears and Kmart out of the picture. That's just leaves Home Depot , Lowes, and maybe Walmart for me
Just here to have fun, keep the bad guys out, and give the stray dogs a place to stay

I don't camp out in the traditional sense you're talking about. I do go somewhere early on Thanksgiving and 'camp out' near the item I want most. Usually somewhere like Walmart, and just hang out in the store starting around noon. It gives me something to do to pass the time on Thanksgiving Day while I wait.

I haven't camped out at best buy in years. When I first started black friday shopping best buy was the 1st and only store I went to. Now with most shopping and deals online I head to walmart and about 2 other stores and that's it

I do think the pitching a tent and camping out for overnights is definitely dying off. Most people are somewhere with good internet overnight snagging deals and crossing items off their "buy in person" list.

My friend's husband was one of the hardcore Best Buy campers, out there for days to be the first. Now he buys it all online

Between online shopping and stores opening earlier on Thanksgiving (which I do most of mine online now) unfortunately, the fun that was camping out seems to be no more. I remember only a few years ago the news would report about people starting to camp out around now.

Yes. Of course, the argument could be made that the entire thing is slowly fading.

Yes, we can all agree that camping out is a thing of the past, but is that so much of a bad thing? Online shopping has made the holiday more enjoyable for everyone, even the people who would never "fight the crowds (what crowds?)" The same with longer hours in store. Gone are the days of trying to hit 4 stores between 6 am and 1pm black friday. I for one welcome the changes.
Decorating the tree
(Gardening)
Wiring all of the lights
(Electrical contracting)
Wrapping up packages and writing out cards
(Office work, out of sight!)

I feel like "Black Friday" as a whole is fading out. It seems there are more and more Pre-black Friday sale that rival the main BF sales. I feel like in another year or two it's just going to be Black Nov. A month long of sales.

Thurs will be mid 40's, unlike last year where it was in the low 30's.
Their $199 TV with echo dot will bring some lines.

Last year the line was about 120 strong when they gave out the tickets (1 hr before opening). I was about 50th in line and didn't get the TV ticket so it was a waste. You will prob need to be in the first 30 to get one of those tickets.

So if the line is 40+, then no need to stay, IMHO.

But that is the fun part. The rush. The excitement. The feeling in the crowd. I can sit at my computer and order off the Internet any day. Its not special. Its boring. What's the point of BF if its online?
