No Thanksgiving/BF this year :(

Postby cinemike16 » Thu Nov 16, 2017 8:22 pm

So I'm stuck in nowhere-ville Florida for work and won't be returning before the Thanksgiving holiday. While the OT/travel pay is awesome I'm kind of bummed that I won't be able to partake in any BF shopping this year. Not to mention the fact that for the first time in my entire existence I won't be partaking in any thanksgiving turkey dinner (unless I buy a turkey tv dinner haha)...

idk why I'm posting this, maybe its a combination of loneliness and a beer one too many. .. anyway, someone cheer me up : )

You and I are in the same boat, at least in the 'no turkey dinner' department. We're moving the weekend following Thanksgiving, so all of our big pots and pans are already packed, including our roaster, and we have no dining room table or seating to speak of since that's already at the storage facility awaiting transport to the new house. I bought all of us Marie Callendar turkey dinners for actual Thanksgiving day, and Wednesday, the day hubby has off for Thanksgiving, we're going to a local chinese buffet with our kiddo and our mothers. It's going to be very strange not cooking for an army this year. :?

I can go to the BF sales, however, it's going to be strictly things that we need for the new house since all of our money is tied up in that this year and we don't want to max our credit cards. Plus, where in the heck would we put it all with the chaos that is our box-covered house? ;)

It took us a while to get over the fact that we can't have Thanksgiving this year. It breaks our hearts that our moms and other members of our family had to sign up for free turkey dinners at their retirement homes or in their neighborhoods. None of them have places large enough to host a dinner and/or can't cook a turkey, which is why we've always hosted since I cook.

So chin up! You are not alone in this plight! Just think of the money you'll save not going into the stores. Plus, there's always Amazon and other online sales... and cyber Monday! :)

Cinemike, could you go out to a restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner? More and more people are doing just that, and there are usually a good number of restaurants that open on Thanksgiving Day to accommodate them.

Similarly, you could still go out Black Friday shopping, buying either just small items or perhaps shipping your purchases home. It might even be fun being able to do Black Friday shopping in a new town, visiting stores that don't exist in your home area.

Sorry Mike, I hope something happens to make it a good day for you. We don't do Thanksgiving in our house because of Black Friday. We'd rather shop. Maybe you can go to Cracker Barrel or something and have you a nice dinner, then find a store to hang out in and shop or at least people watch and enjoy the crowds.

It's always a bummer when you don't get the rituals of the holidays. :(

We just moved so I know about money being sparse and only spend on house items. Our move was 100% unplanned so it wasn't saved up for or anything. Luckily my parents bought a fixer upper and are leasing to own it to me. But I have to pay all of repairs (on top of rent to them) and it needs a new there goes the savings.

Girls and I will be doing JC Penney and Belk for the free coupon/gift cards because that fits the budget.

Sorry your holidays are not going as planned. My favorite saying is, "This too shall pass." I hope you manage to find some joy during the day!

Casinos have good holiday buffets if you have one close - but they're often a pretty penny. I think ours here is $34.99 this year.

That stinks but maybe you could have a traditional Thanksgiving feast when you get back, just on a smaller scale. What about online shopping while you are out of town? Nothing beats the in store rush but you can still score some deals.

I live in nowhere-ville florida!

We will actually be in Disney World on Thanksgiving. We are having a breakfast there before my in laws fly back north. We have been alone every Thanksgiving since we moved down here so that was good enough for me! BUT now my wonderful hubby wants turkey, so we are going to somehow have Thanksgiving. What time we will get home, who knows. When this will all be cooked, who knows. How mad he will get at me when I tell him to make it on his own because I am going shopping... we'll see!

Find something fun to do in FL, I bet there must be places open that you could possibly visit for dinner. Co workers by chance? Maybe you could go out together.

I have some family coming here for Thanksgiving, not a big crowd like we've had the last few years though. With BF store times moving up into Thursday afternoon, BF has become a 2nd priority as far as hitting the early bird sales :( I'm so bummed by the stores doing this. I miss the old BF days when stores opened at 3-4am! We'll still go out shopping, maybe later that evening but I need to look at store opening times first since I know the mall will be where the teenagers want to go. I also want to be cautious since we're taking my 11yo daughter. My kids worked hard over the summer, and have saved $$ so they could go BF shopping.
We have so much going on, I honestly haven't gone through the ads and started my planning like I usually do. But my son already has his list made out
