I got a red Artisan for Christmas two years ago from my parents and have never had an issue with it. And I do a lot of baking, though I have not made heavy bread but I have done heavy frosting and mixes.

I got my mom an Artisan two years ago. She's made bread, cookie dough, cake, etc, and I've used it for really thick gingerbread cookie mix and it handled it all well. No problems!! It's awesome. :D

Artisan: 5 qt., 325w, $350/$300, tilt-head, lots of colors

That's the one we have. Got it from Amazon a few years and I honestly don't remember how much it was. Ours is Gloss Cinammon. DH has since put flame decals along the sides like Alton Brown's haha

I strongly recommend the stand mixer! I use it all the time to bake. Super strong, quiet, and easy to clean. I'm hoping to buy the glass bowl soon.

Target will have the Ultra (4.5 qt, 300 watts, tilt-head) for $199:

Sears will again have the 4.5 qt, (looks like the Pro 450 model from the photo, with bowl-lift), sale price $200, plus there's an additional $50 mail in rebate available. This is a 4am to noon Friday only doorbuster deal. If the "extra 10% off" sale mentioned below applies, the price might actually be $180. This deal is on p1 of the adscan:

Sears will also have the Artisan for $300 and the Pro 500 for $330, both with an additional $30 mail in rebate available and both with a free 2-year subscription to Food & Wine or Travel + Leisure magazine. There's an extra 10% off sale all stand mixers, so the prices might actually be $270 and $297. This sale is Friday and Saturday. The deal is on p35 of the adscan:

I just wanted to add my 2 cents... I have this one...

It's not a KitchenAid but it's awesome! It has a 700W motor, which is stronger than the base KA mixer. I have made cake mixes, frostings, pound cakes, cookies, breads, potatoes, tons of things. There's nothing it can't do yet! I've had it for a year and I've used it about two or three times a month since then. But I really like it and wanted to put it out there.

Belks has the same Artisan deal for $300, with additional $30 mail in rebate available, with 2 years subscription to those magazines. The ad says "additional 25-40% off entire stock kitchen electrics", so it's possible that the Artisan might actually cost $225.

Watch Sam's Club

I know Sam's doesn't have them in their ad, but I've seen the Pro 5qt there.. mof I got my Red one last BF on sale and with a $30 gift card at check out. Love KA mixers. I had the Classic and it did all I wanted it to do until I started making whole-grain double loaf recipes. I gave it to my ddil and got my red one. The only bad thing is since this is a bowl lift model, it is taller than my Classic and it doesn't fit under the upper cupboards. I'm constantly hauling it out of the pantry. (little counter space)

I forgot to mention, you can get a Kitchenaid Professional 5.5 qt. 575 watt stand mixer at Costco for $250 ($300 regular price plus $50 coupon). This is a basically the Professional 6 qt. mixer, except the bowl is smaller and does not come with a pour shield. However, the coupon expires this Sunday, November 28, 2010. The deal is also available online.
