Top Ten Black Friday 2014 TVs

We have started to post our easily digestible Top 10 lists for many popular products including HDTVs, tablets, video games, Apple products and more!

We start with Black Friday's crowned jewel: HDTVs. While laptops and digital cameras are now Black Friday afterthoughts (largely replaced by tablets and cellphones), HDTVs have remained as one of the most sought-after items on Black Friday.

The only thing that seems to change year-over-year is that the discounts start to apply to larger models, a trend that we've seen continued this year as our three top picks are all for TV's with screens 50 inches or larger!

1. Panasonic 50" 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV (TC-50A400U)

$199.99 at Best Buy
Easily the best Black Friday HDTV deal this year, and definitely in the running for overall best deal of Black Friday 2014. The Panasonic TC-50A400U boasts high ratings across the web, and is certainly the cheapest dollar-per-inch deal offered by anyone for a name brand (or even generic) HDTV. The only upset might be Amazon, who has yet to reveal their hand and, in years past, has had stunningly low prices on large sets.

2. 50" 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV (Brands Vary by Store)

$218.00 at Walmart
This deal from Walmart is a close second to the $199.99 Panasonic at Best Buy; but without a known name and at $20 more, it's still backseat to the TC-50A400U. The caveat here is that Walmart may have a larger number of sets available for shoppers. The HDTV in the ad's picture is made by Element, a lesser brand but not the bottom of the ranks. Element TVs are reported to use good panels and are assembled in the USA.

3. Vizio 65" 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV

$648.00 at Walmart
The Vizio 65" 1080p 120Hz HDTV is a solid choice for shoppers looking for a large screen on a relatively small budget. Vizio has gained popularity over the years by offering competitive prices and maintaining good quality in a crowded market. Another 65" set (pick #7) makes the list at nearly the same price but won’t be as widely available as the Walmart deal due to HH Gregg having less store fronts overall.

4. Element 40" 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV

$119.00 at Target
The Element 40" HDTV from Target is a great buy at $119.00. The sub $150 price range typically only has 42" or smaller sets, and this HDTV boasts a 120Hz refresh rate and a 1080p screen. Typically, a 32" HDTV is 60Hz and 720p. This is fine for the average user, but when using the HDTV as a computer monitor or for gaming, the lower resolution and slower refresh rate make a difference.

5. Element 48" 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV

$179.00 at Meijer
The Element 48" HDTV at Meijers is a fantastic choice for large living rooms, offering a lot of viewing area at a shockingly low price. (Other sets best it in specs and brand prestige, but) For shoppers looking for a big HDTV on a little budget, this our top choice. The first place Panasonic HDTV is a better set pound for pound when pitted against this 48" Element, but the Panasonic will surely be harder to nab come Black Friday.

6. 32" Direct LED HDTV

$99.99 at Kohl's
Kohl's is a surprising name on a TV sellers list, but they are offering an excellent price on a 32" HDTV without a brand listed. The HDTV shown is a Hisense, but they state that the brands will vary by store. We love to see HDTVs below the $100 mark, but this deal at Kohl's is the year's best so far for a 32" due to a wide availability. Kohl's is also offering other great deals to make the wait in line even more worth it!

7. Sharp Aquos 65" 1080p 120Hz LED Roku Smart HDTV (LC65LE643U)

$688.00 at HH Gregg
HH Gregg stores are primarily located in the Midwest, South and East Coast so this deal won’t be available everywhere but is absolutely worth a mention. A 65" name brand HDTV for under $700 would be exciting enough on its own. But add on the built-in Roku, essentially making it a SMART TV, and full-array LED backlighting, and you've got a truly feature-rich set at a historic low price.

8. Samsung 55" 2160p Smart 4K Ultra LED HD TV (UN55HU6830FXZA)

$899.99 at Best Buy
The only 4K offering on the list, the Samsung UN55HU6830FXZA 55" Smart LED HDTV is a new HDTV from a top name in consumer electronics. It has many of the advanced tech features sought after by enthusiasts including 4K resolution, built-in WiFi, Smart TV functions and local dimming. You will be hard pressed to find a comparably-priced 1080p HDTV with all these bells and whistles for under $1,000!

9. VIZIO 39" Class 720p 60Hz Full-Array LED TV (D390-B0)

$219.99 at Target
Another Vizio - but this time with full-array LED technology! The HDTV is highly rated at Amazon with 4/5 stars and 2,445 reviews and currently sells for nearly double the quoted Black Friday price. It also uses far less energy than CCFL back-lit LED HDTVs, and is extremely thin because of its back-lighting technology.

10. LG 65" 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV (65LB5200)

$799.99 at Best Buy
Last but not least, we have the LG 65LB5200 65" 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV. The edge-lit set meets the demands of most prospective buyers, and should be more easily available come Black Friday than the above HDTVs. It also boasts MCI 480 to enhance frame rates and keep down on the blur sometimes associated with larger format screens.

While buyers still pay a premium for larger televisions, the once dramatic price jumps between different TV size tiers have been greatly reduced. And even though the biggest discounts are on bargain brands, there are still plenty of name-brand options available at prices rarely seen throughout the year.
