Staples Announces Black Friday 2016 Game Plan

Staples Black Friday 2016 Game Plan

The Big Day is only 55 days away and we are starting to see the first signs of life for the 2016 Black Friday Season!

Staples announced in a press release today that they will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. However, their "amazing" Black Friday deals will go online on Thanksgiving Night. They did not mention a specific start time, but if it is anything like last year, we expect it to be around midnight ET. Staples' in-store sales will begin at 6AM on Black Friday, November 25th and will continue through Cyber Monday.

The press release also states that "Staples' weekly ad will launch in early November, featuring a preview of the special holiday savings in stores and online..." We posted the Staples 2015 Black Friday ad on November 8th, so we assume it will be around November 6th this year.

Staples' press release states that their Black Friday ad will feature "amazing savings" that include "an assortment of the latest and greatest in tech" as well as personalized gifts. As always when shopping at Staples, don't forget to sign up for their free Staples Rewards program to maximize your savings and get free shipping on orders over $14.99. Otherwise you can always opt for in-store pickup. Last year the 20-page 257-item Staples Black Friday ad scan featured great discounts on computers and peripherals.

Like so many other stores, Staples has been trying to find their Black Friday niche over the past few years. Back in 2012, Staples began their in-store sales at 5AM on Black Friday. In 2013, they began their in-store sales at 8PM on Thanksgiving night. In 2014 they tried to find a happy medium by holding an in-store sale from 6PM to 10PM on Thanksgiving, closing the store down, and re-opening on the morning of Black Friday. In 2015 they opened at 6AM on Black Friday, and it must have worked well for them considering the fact that they are repeating that again this year.

Staples Black Friday In-Store Openings:
  • 2016 - 6AM Black Friday
  • 2015 - 6AM Black Friday
  • 2014 - 6PM - 10PM on Thanksgiving Night
  • 2013 - 8PM Thanksgiving Night
  • 2012 - 5AM on Black Friday

Stores are trying to find the sweet spot of giving their customers and employees time to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families whilst not showing up late to the Black Friday shopping extravaganza. To compensate for later opening times, merchants are offering the majority of their Black Friday deals online starting at midnight on Thanksgiving -- that way, they can get the best of both worlds. We expect to see more and more stores go towards the trend of starting their online sales early, while moving their in-store deals back to the ways of the good old days. We've already seen stores big and small announce plans to hold off their in-store sales this year and we expect to see even more follow suit.
