Hot Holiday Toys for 2009

Introduction, Zhu Zhu Pets and Bakugan Battle Brawlers

The market for toys is huge and always changing. By the time you're done sorting through all of your options, odds are that what was hot will be old news and the next big thing will be sweeping into the market, putting you back at square one in your search for the perfect gift.

We've put together a list of some of the most popular toys on the market right now. Some of them, like Lego construction sets, you'll probably recognize. Some, like Bakugan and Zhu Zhu pets, you may not be entirely familiar with. We're steering clear of video games in this article as they will have their own article later published later this week.

Zhu Zhu Pets
Zhu Zhu pets are cute little plush-like toy hamsters that zip around on wheels, exploring their environment or interacting with their owners. They squeak and chatter in response to petting just like real hamsters, but without any of the mess or need for feeding and care. Remember that although they may not need food, batteries are another story. Along with that, there's an entire world of pricy accessories like hamster wheels and "homes" available. The Zhu Zhu pets won't need them to stay happy, but your child might.

These critters are extremely popular this year, and sellers are aware of it. Even big-name retailers have marked prices way up in some areas. The hamsters sell for as low as $15, but there are many stores, online or not, with prices as high as $45. Be sure to check multiple locations to get the best price.

Bakugan Battle Brawlers
A huge hit TV series among pre-teen boys, the Bakugan Battle Brawlers series has spawned a long line of toys, electronics, and other merchandise much like Power Rangers did about a decade ago. The main line of collectible toys and cards can be entertaining on their own, but the focus of the series is a two player strategy game that's sort of like a mixture of trading card games and checkers. Younger kids will probably just want to play with the action figures, but for older kids, the strategy game is an engaging and creative experience.

Like most games based on collecting cards and figures, a full set of Bakugan toys can cost a lot of money. Starter kits with just the game basics are around $10-$15 but booster packs, special figures, and accessories can add up to hundreds of dollars. Be careful when purchasing action figures for very young children; many of the toys contain marbles that can be removed and possibly swallowed.
