Hot Holiday Toys 2018

Nothing sets the scene for the holidays like a well-decorated tree, soft lighting accompanied by the warmth of the yule log, and toys nestled away beneath the tree. While toys don’t normally qualify as doorbusters, they are every bit as capable of creating the kind of mania for which Black Friday has become infamous.

Each and every year, there is that one impossible toy that creates a buying frenzy wherever the toy appears on store shelves. Be it Cabbage Patch Kids, Furbies, Tickle Me Elmo, or Turbo Man, getting ahead of the holiday rush and picking up that hot holiday toy before the first snowflake has fallen is the best way to avoid holiday headaches. With that in mind, here are the BFAds top picks for hottest holiday toys of 2018.

L.O.L. Surprise! Bigger Surprise! - $89.99 – Ages 5 & Up

L.O.L. Surprise! Bigger Surprise!

Somewhere between YouTube unboxing videos and loot crates, toys were sent down a path that was exacerbated by Hatchimals and have culminated with the L.O.L. Surprise! line of toys. The appeal of L.O.L. Surprise! lies solely in the packaging and the unboxing process, where kids open the outer packaging of L.O.L. Surprise! and are greeted with a variety of smaller packages to open, each containing an accessory or companion to a doll that is hidden somewhere inside.

It’s easy to see the appeal of L.O.L. Surprise! Throughout the opening process, kids are greeted with clues and various styles of wrapping, from simple cellophane to plastic-wrapped eggs, to push through blister packs that resemble cold medicine. Some are even encased in a Jello-like substance. Each unwrapping gives more clues about the main toy hidden within.

Like Shopkins, these toys are tiny but come in endless varieties and styles that keep kids coming back for more. The newest L.O.L. Surprise!, aptly called “Bigger Surprise!,” is one of the largest L.O.L. Surprise! sets yet, with each package containing 60 Limited Edition L.O.L. Surprise! items.

Fingerlings Untamed – $14.84 - Ages 5 & Up

Fingerlings Untamed

Fingerlings Untamed brings five varieties of dinosaur-themed Fingerlings to the hand of your child and now features two different modes. Using the sensors on the head and snout coupled with a microphone and over 40 sound effects, Fingerlings Untamed will react fiercely or like a friend depending on your child’s interaction.

Pomsies – $14.82 - Ages 3 & Up

Pomsies

Each and every year, there is a new interactive toy for kids to fall in love with. This year, the far and away hit is Pomsies, which are very much the next evolution of a Tamagotchi or virtual pet.

Rather than being a tiny LCD-based pet that lives its entire life in pockets or on key chains, the Pomsie virtual pet is a large, colorful, fluffy critter that prefers to wrap its long, moldable tail around your child’s arm. With a quick boop to the nose, the Pomsie springs to life with LED-colored eyes that let your child know when the Pomsie is tired, cold, hungry, or wants to play. A brush is hooked around the tail, where it won’t easily be lost, letting your child groom and care for their Pomsie while feeling the Pomsie purr with love and affection.

Grumblies – $19.88 - Ages 3 & Up

Grumblies Tremor

For kids who appreciate the interactive nature of toys like Pomsies but prefer a less delicate approach comes Grumblies. With Grumblies, kids are encouraged take on a rough-and-tumble style of play as each of the 4 Grumblies characters react to actions that irritate them.

Poke them, prod them, shake them, tip them over, or flip them upside down, every aggravating action from your child is met with reactions and sound effects that bring these furry menaces ever closer to a total meltdown, which sends the Grumblie into a rumbling, vibrating fit of rage.

Nintendo Switch - $299.99 - $399.99

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo earned a spot on our naughty list last year just by the sheer fact that the Switch was the hottest item in video games and was nearly impossible to find on store shelves. The hype surrounding Nintendo’s home/portable hybrid has not only held throughout the year but is reaching levels that shouldn’t even be possible.

Aside from the standard Nintendo Switch options, which come with either grey or neon joy-cons and retail for $299.99, there are a variety of special edition consoles coming this holiday season that feature some of the hottest Switch titles of 2018:

Nintendo Switch Fortnite Bundle with Neon Joy-Cons - $299.99 – Includes the free-to-play phenomenon Fortnite Battle Royale pre-installed with Double Helix in-game gear and 1000 V-Bucks in-game currency.

Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Bundle - $359.99 – Includes a download code for the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and comes with a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate branded dock and joy-cons.

Nintendo Switch Pikachu and Eevee Edition - $399.99 – Includes Eevee and Pikachu-themed console, joy-cons, and switch dock and comes with either Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee or Pikachu Edition along with the new Pokéball Plus accessory for use with the hit Pokémon Go mobile game.

Don’t Step in It - $14.25 – Ages 4 & Up

Don’t Step in It

Families that don’t mind a little bit of crude fun with their kids can find a load of fun with Hasbro’s Don’t Step in It. A simple but hilarious premise, Don’t Step In It comes with a plastic strip of “lawn” that your kids lay out on the floor, along with 4 cans of a Play-Doh-like compound and a mold that helps shape the compound into tiny dog droppings.

Kids take turns with a blindfold while the other players strategically scatter the freshly molded poops around the lawn before the blindfolded player has to try and navigate the lawn while stepping in the least amount of surprises.

Playstation Classic - $99.99

Playstation Classic

Never one to let Nintendo hog all the glory, Sony has entered the retro mini console scene with a device that is sure to top the wish lists of collectors and those looking for a holiday dose of gaming nostalgia. With the Playstation Classic, Sony becomes the first of the major gaming companies to put out a classic console that features primarily 3D and polygon-based games rather than 8bit or 16bit sprites.

At the time of writing, only 5 of the 20 included titles are known, but Sony claims the system will be filled with fan favorites such as Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Wild Arms, Ridge Racer Type 4, and Jumping Flash. While those titles in particular may be hit-or-miss for some, it does show that Sony intends to have a variety of titles that span all genres, and FF7 alone is enough to make the PS Classic a hit.

Shoppers should be advised, however, that while the Playstation Classic does include two controllers and an HDMI cable, there is no power supply included in the box. Instead, Sony is including a micro USB cable and expects consumers to have their own 5V/1.0A USB power adapter, so make sure to pick one up if you don’t have any extra smartphone chargers to dedicate to the PS Classic.

Final Thoughts

There’s always a big debate about whether one should wait for possible doorbusters to occur on Black Friday or to hedge one’s bet by buying the toy now in case of a sellout. As we do every year, our recommendation is to read up on your favorite retailers' return policies and see how to use them to your advantage. Retailers like Walmart, who offer refunds up to 90 days, can be used to purchase your toy now and give you the opportunity to stake out price breaks within that return window while still having that hot holiday toy secured in case it disappears completely from store shelves.

Of course, there is no better place to stake out price breaks than BFAds.net! We’ll be working around the clock to bring you every deal for every item on your holiday shopping list, so don’t forget to check back with BFAds.net, follow us on Twitter, and like us on Facebook so you won’t miss out on any of the Black Friday action.
