Grey Thursday Here to Stay

Grey Thursday Here to Stay

Whether you're pro-Thanksgiving shopping or anti-Grey Thursday, here's one fact: Thanksgiving shopping isn't going anywhere.

Take, for example, the Mall of America. We already reported that the Mall of America would be closed on Thanksgiving day. You've probably heard the news a zillion times through various outlets. However, what they didn't tell you is that the Mall of America left the ultimate decision up to individual stores. While mall-specifc attractions will be closed, like the food court and Nickelodeon Universe, stores are allowed to set their own hours.

Two giant mall proprietors have since joined the mix. CBL Properties will keep 72 of their locations closed, and Simon Properties is keeping their hundreds of locations open. We've also noticed a strong trend in recent years of stores getting the best of both worlds. The vast majority of stores that are closed on Thanksgiving will offer special online sales on November 24th this year.

The bottom line here hasn't changed: individual stores, especially anchor stores, can by-and-large set their own store hours. This is why stores like Macy's and Kohl's can open on Thanksgiving even if the mall they're housed in closes. Whether a mall wants to stay open or closed is their own prerogative -- stores make the ultimate decision regarding their Thanksgiving and Black Friday hours.
