Black Friday 2018 Video Game Buying Guide

2018 has shaped up to be one of the best years in video gaming. The emergence of battle royale shooters has kids and adults dancing in the streets, 4K gaming is now a reality on home consoles, and the Switch has reinvigorated the market, breathing new life into games that some missed, and others that never got their fair shake.

The best part about the popularity of video games is that this Black Friday, prices of the current generation of consoles have finally come down to earth, and both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 can be found in that under-$200 sweet spot that makes them affordable for most, and deep discounts on hit titles for all systems means it’s also affordable to pick up a couple of games to go with your new system.

The only problem is that with so many systems and games advertised at every retailer that deals in video games, the choices are vast and overwhelming. That, of course, is where BFAds comes in with another of our signature buying guides! This time, we’re talking on video games, showing you where you can get the best deal on a new console, and giving you our favorite picks for doorbuster deals spanning all of the current gen systems.

Nintendo Switch

After not showing up anywhere last year, the Nintendo Switch has come back strong with a bundle deal that is available at many Black Friday retailers. Although still priced at the MSRP of $299.99, along with the console, Nintendo is including a digital download of Mario Kart 8, and a set of special teal and red colored joy-cons.

Switch Titles

Nintendo 3DS/2DS

For two years running, Nintendo has neglected to have any deals on their 3DS line of handhelds and instead offered a special holiday bundle with the original 2DS. This year, a special yellow and red Nintendo 2DS comes bundled with a downloadable copy of Super Mario Maker and is available for $79.99 at Best Buy (p16), Walmart (p13), Target (p17), Meijer (p2), and Shopko (p6). Although there aren’t many options for hardware, Walmart has come through with some excellent deals on some of the best handheld titles from Nintendo. Remember, these games will run on any model of Nintendo 2DS or 3DS.

Microsoft Xbox One and Xbox One X

After a dearth of deals on the Xbox One X last year, which that landed Microsoft on our 2017’s Worst Deals list, they are back in a big way this Black Friday with deals on both the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X. If you’re not familiar with the differences between the two, the summary is that Xbox One S can stream 4K video and play 4K Blu-ray discs, but video games will run at a max of 1080p. The Xbox One X, on the other hand, is substantially more powerful and is capable of running both games and video at full 4K resolution. The good news is that the games are the same and will work in either the Xbox One S or Xbox One X.

Shoppers should note that if they aren’t interested in the Minecraft Holiday bundle, Wal-Mart has across the board discounts on all Xbox One S bundles, marked down to $229 each, and is also offering $70 off all Xbox One X bundles.

Xbox One

Xbox One 1TB Minecraft Creators Bundle w/ $60 Kohl’s Cash $199.99 at Kohl’s

Kohl’s wins easy here by taking the Xbox One S Minecraft Creators holiday bundle and adding the value of their Kohl’s Cash promotion. Picking up the console here at $199.99, the same price found at all other retailers, will also net you a cool $60 in Kohl’s Cash to spend on a return trip to Kohl’s between November 24th and December 5th.

Runner Up

1TB Minecraft Creators Bundle w/ $20 Gift Card $199.99 at Target

If Kohl’s Cash doesn’t interest you, or if you’ve got other deals to chase down at Target, you can still get a 1up over the competition by purchasing the $199.99 Minecraft creators bundle there, where you’ll also receive a bonus of a $20 Target gift card.

Xbox One X

Xbox One X 1TB Console with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds w/ $120 Kohl’s Cash $399.99 at Kohl’s

Kohl’s Cash likely would have won our pick anyways, just for the fact that you’ll receive a whopping $120 bonus by purchasing the 1TB Xbox One X console at a Black Friday price of $399.99, a $100 savings off of MSRP. But Kohl’s isn’t stopping there, and instead they are making sure they secure the top pick this year by also including a free download of the hit shooter PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

Runner Up

Xbox One X Gold Rush Special Edition Console with Battlefield V and Extra Controller $429.99 at Best Buy

Although the retail price is actually higher here, there is a ton of value to be found in the Xbox One X 1TB Gold Rush bundle at Best Buy. For $429.99, you’ll get a copy of Battlefield V, a second Xbox One X controller, and a special edition console that features a gorgeous gold and black gradient paint job.

Xbox Exclusives

Sony PlayStation 4

This year, the PlayStation 4 lands in the same camp as the Nintendo Switch. Sony did release an exciting holiday bundle that includes a 1TB PlayStation 4 Slim Console and a copy of the hit action title Spider-Man, and is available at a special bundle price of $199.99 just about everywhere. Unfortunately, unlike what we’ve seen with Xbox One consoles, there are no special bundles or bonuses happening, and the PlayStation 4 Pro has not turned up in any Black Friday ads. GameStop is running a promotion where shoppers receive a $50 gift card with purchase of a Playstation 4, but it specifically excludes the holiday bundle and does not mention that the deal is available on a PS4 Pro. Kohl’s, again, might be the one saving grace here, although it’s unknown if they will carry the Spider-Man bundle, they do sell the PlayStation 4 Pro, so if it’s in stock at your local store you could take advantage of the Kohl’s Cash deal running all weekend and receive $120 in Kohl’s Cash.

Multiplatform Titles

Here, we’ve combed through the Black Friday ads to bring you the best deals in several genres of games that appear on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While these are the lowest prices we could find, they are discounted at many retailers, so if you can’t make it to the stores we feature here, check the ads of the stores you’ll visit on Black Friday to see if they have their own discount on these games.
