Black Friday 2017 Video Game Buying Guide

Introduction

If one were to look at the Black Friday ads in 2017 as though they were a microcosm of the state of the game industry, one might not even realize that some of the hottest consoles of the year even exist. Despite there being hundreds of deals on consoles and games of all sorts, there is a noticeable absence of the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One X, and Nintendo handhelds, which are without a single doorbuster or sale price this Black Friday.

It’s not all bah-humbugs for gamers this year. With current generation consoles at the lowest prices they’ve ever been, and mountains of discounted games to choose from, there is something to satisfy every gamer on your shopping list this Black Friday.

Playstation 4

Sony’s latest home console begins the holiday tale that reads more like Groundhog Day than Thanksgiving, as everywhere you turn you’ll find the same bundle offering at the same price. If you’re interested in the bottom line, there are many options, with Target, Kohl’s, Walmart, Dell Home, Toys R Us, Best Buy and GameStop all feature the Playstation 4 1TB console for a Black Friday price of $199.99. While this isn’t as exciting as in years past, it’s still a great deal, and a couple of retailers have some throw-ins to lure you into their stores on Black Friday. Also, for the first time ever, we see a Black Friday deal on the supercharged Playstation 4 Pro.

Of note, if you don't care about retailer bonuses, you should know that you can get the PS4 Slim 1TB Console for $199 right now at Amazon or Walmart. It doesn't come with any bells and whistles but it's available at that price as of press time.

Winner

Playstation 4 1TB Console w/ $60 Kohl’s Cash $199.99 at Kohl's

In a year where every retailer has the exact same deal on a Playstation 4 console, Kohl’s is able to pull the tree skirt out from under the competition thanks to their Kohl’s Cash promotion. Pick up this Playstation 4 1TB console for the Black Friday price of $199.99 at Kohl’s and you’ll receive $60 in Kohl’s Cash. Shoppers should note this console does not include a game.

Runner Up

Playstation 4 1TB Console w/ $50 GameStop Gift Card $199.99 at GameStop

GameStop takes second place this Black Friday by being the only nationwide retailer after Kohl’s to offer additional incentives to buy a Playstation 4 console. Since this console does not include a game, if you’re shopping for a gamer or are a gamer yourself, this is probably the better deal than the winner, since the $50 GameStop gift card could be used for any of the myriad of discounted used and new Black Friday titles offered at GameStop.

Honorable Mention

Playstation 4 Pro $349.99 at GameStop

The Playstation 4 Pro at last makes its Black Friday debut this year at GameStop where shoppers can save $50 on Sony’s first 4K console. If you’re after a discounted gaming machine that takes advantage of your new 4K Ultra HDTV, GameStop should be your primary shopping location, since it’s the only nationwide retailer discounting the Playstation 4 Pro this Black Friday.

Exclusive Titles

Horizon Zero Dawn - $19.99 at Best Buy and GameStop

Persona 5 - $30.00 at GameStop

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End - $20.00 at Best Buy and GameStop

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - $20.00 at Best Buy and GameStop

Everybody’s Golf - $20.00 at Best Buy and GameStop

Xbox One

It’s a double dose of déjà vu with Xbox One S deals this Black Friday, with the usual suspects offering the exact same deal on a 500GB console. Choose from Target, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Walmart, Toys R Us, Dell Home, GameStop and a slew of regional stores that have this Black Friday deal at the $189.99 price point. There are also a few different 1TB bundles for those looking for a more premium purchase, but no sign of 2017’s Xbox One X.

Winner

Xbox One S 500GB w/ $45 Kohl’s Cash $189.99 at Kohl’s

Kohl’s is able to snag another win here thanks to their Kohl’s Cash promotion. $189.99 is the rock bottom price for an Xbox One S 500GB console this Black Friday, but Kohl’s sweetens the deal by adding an additional $45 Kohl’s Cash. Protip: Spend another $10 and you’ll snag $60 in Kohl’s Cash!

Runner Up

Xbox One S 1TB w/ 2nd Controller & Halo Wars 2 w/ $90 Kohl’s Cash $329.99 at Kohl's

Kohl’s again takes the crown, but this time it’s not only because of Kohl’s Cash. This 1TB Xbox One S bundle, which includes a downloadable copy of Halo Wars 2 and an extra controller would be an outstanding deal by itself, but with an extra $90 in Kohl’s Cash that drives the net cost down to $239.99 and makes this the deal to aim for if you want a 1TB console.

Honorable Mention

Xbox One S 500GB w/ Battlefield 1, Forza 7, & Forza Horizon 3 $229.99 at Dell Home

Dell Home features what is probably the best all-around value on an Xbox One S 500GB console. For $229.99, Dell is offering the Battlefield 1 bundle and throwing in free copies of Forza Motorsport 7 and Forza Horizon 3, making this one of the most attractive bundle offerings this Black Friday. The only thing keeping this deal from taking top prize here is Dell’s notorious reputation for having incredible Xbox One deals on Black Friday that sell out in literally minutes. Whether it’s because of extremely low stock or extreme popularity, it’s a risky endeavor to rely on this deal complete your shopping list.

Exclusive Titles

Cuphead w/ Bonus 45LP Soundtrack - $19.99 at Gamestop

Forza Horizon 3 - $15.00 at Target

Gears of War 4 - $15.00 at Best Buy

Halo 5: Guardians - $14.99 at Best Buy

Halo Wars - $19.99 at Best Buy and Dell Home

Nintendo

After bouncing back with the Nintendo Switch after one of the company’s biggest flops in the Wii U, and with the introduction of yet another handheld with the New Nintendo 2DS, we had high hopes for a wide variety of deals and doorbusters on Nintendo consoles this Black Friday. Sadly, there simply are no compelling console deals to be found this year, and the only Nintendo offering that is unique to the holidays is the new Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Nintendo 2DS bundle, offered at Best Buy, GameStop, and Target for the everyday Nintendo 2DS price of $79.99.

Despite Nintendo’s Grinch-like hardware offerings, there are a few notable software deals that shoppers can pick up if they are needing games to go along with their MSRP consoles this Black Friday.

Switch Titles

1, 2, Switch - $24.99 at Best Buy

Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle - $29.99 at Walmart
