Black Friday 2017 Smart Phone Buying Guide

Black Friday 2017 Smart Phone Buying Guide

Smart phones have revolutionized nearly every aspect of our daily lives, giving us the power of limitless information at our fingertips. With such style, fanfare, and ubiquity, it’s no wonder that retailers across the country routinely battle for supremacy in smartphone doorbusters, slashing the prices of even the best and newest smartphones.

There are deals for just about anyone this Black Friday, and whether you are an Apple fanatic or an Android lover, or just want the lowest price possible on a smart device with no strings attached, you’ll be sure to find a bargain in the 2017 Smart Phone Buying Guide from

Apple iPhones

2017 was a big year for Apple and Apple fans, where we saw the introduction of three different models of iPhone flagships for the first time in the device’s history. Of course, the talk of the town was the all-new iPhone X, which left its siblings the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus looking positively archaic in comparison. If you’ve been perusing the ever growing library of Black Friday ads here at, you may have been disappointed to find the iPhone X was nowhere to be seen. Or was it?

iPhone X $300 Gift Card & $0 Down with Qualified Activation at Walmart

Buried deep in the throes of fine print is the hottest smartphone deal of Black Friday 2017. While strangely not pictured in the ad itself, the $300 gift card with $0 down iPhone promotion at Walmart includes the iPhone X! Walmart is the only major retailer offering a discount, gift card or otherwise, on the most talked about smartphone of 2017. If iPhone X is not for you, this deal, which requires qualified activation on AT&T or Verizon, is also available on iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus.

Runner Up

iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus $250 Gift Card at Target

Target takes second place here on their Black Friday promotion, which will net shoppers a $250 Target gift card with qualified activation of an Apple iPhone 8 or 8 Plus on AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon. Best Buy is offering a cash discount on these phones, but the ambiguity of “up to $200" without any fine print, with the maximum still being $50 less than Target’s deal means shoppers should head for the latter for an iPhone 8 deal.

Samsung Galaxy Phones

After a tumultuous 2016 that culminated in the recall of all Note 7 devices, Samsung had to go big in 2017 if they hoped to wipe the missteps of yesterday from the minds of shoppers. Not only did Samsung go big, they went big and bezel-less, with their largest, slickest, most stylish line of Galaxies to date. Black Friday is a great time to shop for any of the Galaxy 8 line of smartphones, as each and every model is available at a discount.

Galaxy S8, S8+, or Note 8 $300 off with Activation at Best Buy

A $300 savings seems to be the trend this Black Friday on Samsung Galaxy Phones, but only at Best Buy does that discount come in the form of cold, hard cash. So while other retailers are discounting the latest flagships from Samsung in the form of gift cards, Best Buy is cutting the price by $300 with the qualified activation of a Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, or Galaxy Note 8 on the Verizon or Sprint networks. As is becoming the norm on Black Friday, Best Buy will have two exclusive colors: Deepsea Blue and Coral Blue.

Runner Up

Galaxy S8, S8+, or Note 8 $300 Gift Card at Walmart, Target

The silver medal is shared here between Walmart and Target, as either retailer is offering a $300 gift card with qualified activation of Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, or Galaxy Note 8. However, there are a couple of important caveats that shoppers should be aware of when planning their Black Friday trek to grab a new Galaxy phone. First, Walmart’s offer is limited to activations on the AT&T or Verizon networks, with qualified customers eligible for $0 down. Target does not have the $0 down promotion, but the activation promotion is available on AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon networks.

Prepaid / Off Contract Phones

Black Friday is all about the bottom dollar. For shoppers who don’t want to be tied into contracts and payment plans, and want to have the freedom to leave their carrier at a moment’s notice without early termination fees, off-contract and prepaid phones are the only way to go. With so many wireless resellers and phone models to choose from, we picked a few of the standout favorites from among all retailers offering deals on no-contract phones.

Flagship Pick

Samsung Galaxy 8, 8+, or Note 8 $150 Unlocked at Best Buy

Shoppers who are looking to pick up one of Samsung's 2017 flagship Galaxy phones but refuse to be in the pockets of big wireless can still find savings on an unlocked smart phone this Black Friday. Forget worrying about activations or payment plans and save $150 off a Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, or Galaxy Note 8 by heading to Best Buy, where these phones will also be available in exclusive shades of blue.

Budget iPhone Pick

Apple iPhone SE 32GB $99.99 – Target, Walmart

Anyone shopping for youngsters or those who simply enjoy the luxury and ease of use of iOS, but don't want to break the bank on a new iPhone, can grab the very capable iPhone SE 32GB this Black Friday for just shy of $100.00. This prepaid MVNO offer is available on either Total Wireless at Target, or on Walmart Family Mobile at Walmart.

Bargain Basement Smartphone Pick

ZTE Maven 8GB Android Smartphone - $7.99 at Best Buy

The sub-$10 price point is one that, historically, has been reserved for flip phones that seemed to be from another era. Just as 2017 meant an all-time high with the $1000+ flagships, Black Friday brings it full circle with an all-time low, a $7.99 Android smartphone. Sure, you won't set the world on fire with the Maven from ZTE, which features 8GB of storage, 5MP camera, and a Snapdragon 210 processor, but for anyone needing an inexpensive phone with a 5" screen for light productivity, it doesn't get any less expensive than this.

Final Thoughts

While there are deals galore on smartphones, there are a few bumps in the road that shoppers should note before they head into the Black Friday fray. First, if you’re after the discounted flagships requiring activation, each store has designated dates and times when activations will occur, check out our ad scans or call your local store to find the full details of where and when you need to be to make sure you don’t miss out on your flagship deal.

Also, shoppers should note that if none of our off-contract picks seem appealing or aren’t on your favorite carrier, Best Buy has well over a dozen different off-contract options to choose from beginning on page 23 of their circular.

If you’re out shopping for a new smart phone this Black Friday, that might mean your old smartphone is on its last leg.
