Black Friday 2015 Video Game Buying Guide

Although this is the third Black Friday for both the Xbox One and Playstation 4, it’s the first holiday season to really catch these consoles in stride. Several must-have titles have shoppers ready to finally kiss their 360s and PS3s goodbye and make the leap to a new game console. Retailers are well aware of this, as made evident by the explosive competition in console bundles this year for the Xbox One in particular. Each and every retailer has a different console bundle offering, some with simple gift card toss-ins and others with full blown doorbuster worthy deals.

The other consoles like the Wii U, 3DS, and even the PS Vita are feeling the holiday spirit as well, and all are featured in this year’s Black Friday ads. The only achievement left to unlock now is to learn how and where to get the best deal this holiday. That means your Gamerscore is about to go up, as we present to you our top picks for the best deals on video games and video game consoles this Black Friday.

Microsoft Xbox One

There has been a fervor in recent weeks among retailers trying assemble the best Xbox One bundle. Although Microsoft has released their own annual holiday bundle, which includes a 1TB Xbox One console and 3 games (Gears of War Ultimate Edition, Rare Replay, and Ori), retailers are all but ignoring it, and instead creating their own bundles to deliver the best Black Friday value. Because of this fierce competition, there has never been a better time than this Black Friday to buy a new Xbox One console, and there likely won’t be better deals than these between now and Christmas.

Our Pick

Xbox One Gears of War 500GB Bundle with Extra Controller + Fallout 4 $299.99 - Dell

Dell fired the first shot this year in the war of Xbox One bundles, and even after all the subsequent ad leaks, no one has been able to beat their incredible bundle offering. The Xbox One Gears of War 500GB console includes a downloadable voucher for Gears of War Ultimate Edition, and Dell is reducing the price of the console to $299.99, a $50 savings. On top of that, they are throwing in an extra Xbox One wireless controller, and Fallout 4, one of the hottest games of the holiday season, which also includes a free downloadable copy of Fallout 3. Maximize the value in this bundle by installing Gears of War and playing online before December 31st, 2015, and Microsoft will add the entire Gears of War library (Gears 1, 2, 3, and Judgement) to your account absolutely free, for a total of 6 games in this package. Don’t forget, Dell Preferred Account holders who sign up for the free Dell Advantage rewards program get 10% back in the form of a Dell e-gift card and free 2nd business day shipping!

Runner Up

Xbox One Rise of the Tomb Raider 1TB Bundle with Free Wireless Controller $349.99 – Best Buy

Best Buy takes the runner up on Xbox One bundles with their 1TB Rise of the Tomb Raider bundle for $349.99. This bundle includes one of the most anticipated titles of the year in Rise of the Tomb Raider, along with the critically acclaimed 2013 Tomb Raider reboot. Solidifying the 2nd place spot here is the free wireless controller Best Buy is tossing in with the purchase of this bundle, making it one of the best values on an Xbox One console this Black Friday.

Many retailers will have discounted Xbox One wireless controllers this Black Friday, but Gamestop is the place to be if you want to nab their exclusive Lunar White controller for only $44.99. If white isn’t your color, Best Buy is offering $25 off select Xbox One controllers.

Sony Playstation 4

Compared to what is happening in the Xbox One camp, Black Friday deals on the Playstation 4 seem to be a bit lackluster by comparison. Sony has released their holiday bundle, which includes a 500GB Playstation 4 console with Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, which is a remastered compilation of PS3 hit titles Uncharted 1, 2, and 3. Retailers are not showing much creativity with their PS4 offerings, and instead are just knocking $50 off the price. While a $50 discount is nothing to sneeze at, the lack of competition here means there aren’t any doorbuster caliber offerings to be found on PS4 consoles this year.

Our Pick

Playstation 4 Uncharted 500GB Bundle $299.99 w/ $75 Kohl’s Cash – Kohl’s

Kohl’s is the only retailer to offer any sort of incentive on this ubiquitous holiday bundle. This set includes the 500GB Playstation 4 console, one Dualshock 4 wireless controller, and a copy of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection for $299.99 and is available at just about any retailer that sells PS4 consoles. This includes Best Buy, Walmart, Gamestop, and Target, but only at Kohl’s will you receive $75 in Kohl’s cash with your purchase.

If you’re after an additional controller to go with your new Playstation 4 console, the best price Black Friday has to offer is $39.99 for the standard black Dualshock 4 wireless controller, available at both Best Buy and Gamestop.

Nintendo Wii U

The Nintendo Wii U holiday bundle is arguably the best holiday bundle of any console, as it includes two of the most sought after titles for Nintendo’s touchpad based console. The bundle includes a black 32GB Wii U console, and comes preloaded with fan service fighter Super Smash Bros, and the unique and family friendly shooter Splatoon for $279.99 MSRP. For Wii U fans that also love amiibos, Nintendo’s NFC powered phenomenon, take note that the modern variant of the 8-Bit Mario amiibo figure goes on sale this Black Friday for the first time in the United States, exclusively at Walmart.

Our Pick

Nintendo Holiday Bundle $249.99 – Target & Walmart

The Nintendo holiday bundle which includes the 32GB Wii U deluxe console, Wii U gamepad, and comes preloaded with two of the best games the Wii U has to offer, Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. For only $279 MSRP, there is already a great deal of value in this bundle, but both Target and Walmart are slashing that price by $20.

Wii U Exclusive Titles

Super Mario Maker $49.99 – Target

Shoppers who are making Target their Black Friday destination for a new Wii U bundle can also find a great deal on Super Mario Maker, one of the most fun and popular titles on the Wii U. Target is offering a free $15 Target gift card with purchase of the game for $49.99. If you already have a Wii U and are just looking for great deals on some titles you may have missed, head down to Best Buy where Splatoon and Super Smash Bros are each on sale for $34.99.

Nintendo 3DS XL

Nintendo’s confusing naming convention is really coming to a head on Black Friday because both the New Nintendo 3DS XL and the (original) Nintendo 3DS XL are both advertised at sale prices this Black Friday. If you’ve got someone on your shopping list wanting a 3DS, double check that you are actually buying the correct console before you head to the checkout counter.

Our Pick

Nintendo 3DS XL $179.99 w/ $45 Kohl’s Cash – Kohl’s

The Nintendo 3DS XL offers a small performance boost, an added control nub, and improved 3D tracking. If you’re in the market for one of these systems, you can save $20 off MSRP from a variety retailers including Gamestop, Target, Best Buy, and Toys R Us for $179.99. Kohl’s has once again sweetened the deal here with their Black Friday promotion of $15 Kohl’s Cash for every $50 spent in store, netting you a $45 savings with purchase of the Nintendo 3DS XL.

Runner Up

Nintendo 3DS XL with Super Mario 3D Land $129.00 – Walmart

Walmart is blazing their own 3D trails this Black Friday with this $129 3DS XL bundle. Note that this is not the “New” 3DS XL model that took our top pick, but rather the original 3DS XL system, which is capable of playing any game in the vast Nintendo 3DS/DS/DSi library with the exception of Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. For one of the lowest prices ever seen on a 3DS XL console, the price alone would be a great deal, even without the free Super Mario 3D Land that comes preinstalled.

Exclusive Titles

Nintendo is like Apple in regards to their first-party software, and they rarely if ever go on sale, so Black Friday is a great time to catch up on titles you may have missed. Target is a great place to get this done, where they’ll have New Super Mario Bros 2, Animal Crossing New Leaf, and Mario Kart 7 for $15 each. Target is also the place for Pokemon fans to find Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire on sale for $25 each.

Playstation Vita

Unfortunately the Playstation Vita is a console that has been somewhat forgotten by developers. Although it is still alive and supported by Sony, the new titles released for the system are almost exclusively anime themed or JRPGs, and for fans of these genres, the console has no equal. So imagine our surprise when we learned that the Vita was not left out of the Black Friday festivities, but actually got a brand new sku and color for the holiday season.

Our Pick

Playstation Vita Aqua Blue $169.99 – Gamestop

In a surprise move, Sony is releasing a new Aqua Blue colored Playstation Vita console this holiday as a Gamestop exclusive. That exclusivity isn’t stopping Gamestop from offering a Black Friday bargain, where they’re giving shoppers a $30 discount on this blue beauty for $169.99, Tues-Saturday only. If this deal doesn’t interest you, you’re out of luck, since Gamestop is the only retailer advertising a Black Friday deal on the PS Vita

Exclusive Titles

Gamestop has got a fantastic deal on one of the Vita’s best and only recent action games, Freedom Wars, for only $4.99

Multi-Platform Picks

While there weren’t many stellar deals on console exclusives this year, the multiplatform offerings by the major retailers is a treasure trove of savings. Here are our picks for a few of the best Black Friday offerings for the year’s most popular titles. Keep in mind that retailers this year listed dozens of titles in their Black Friday ads, so if we haven’t profiled a game you’re after here, that doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t discounted this holiday.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

Xbox One & Playstation 4 $35.00 – Walmart, Best Buy & Target

The latest in Ubisoft’s hidden-in-plain-sight stealth assassination series is the first to be developed from the ground up for the new generation of consoles. If you missed Assassin’s Creed Unity and are looking to pick up that title as well, walk right past the Gamestop deal with a gentle push and head to Walmart where Assassin’s Creed Unity is only $8.

Destiny: The Taken King

Xbox One & Playstation 4 $35.00 – Target & Walmart

Bungie’s massive update to their online first person loot fest is practically a prerequisite now if you want to find a team to run with online. Fortunately a deal on Destiny The Taken King is much easier to find than a Gjallarhorn, and you can pick up this massively popular title for only $35 at both Target and Walmart.

Grand Theft Auto V

Xbox One & Playstation 4 $25.00 – Walmart

Although Grand Theft Auto V was released back in 2013 for the last generation on consoles, the definitive versions to own are those found on PC, Xbox One, and Playstaion 4, which hit the shelves this past April. You won’t have to plan a heist to get your hands on a copy of Rockstar’s widely acclaimed massively open-world action title. Instead, simply set a waypoint to your local Walmart this Black Friday and pick up one of the year’s best titles for only $25.

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt

Xbox One & Playstation 4 $24.99 – Target & Walmart or $29.99 - Gamestop

You’ve got a couple of options here to consider if you’re after one of the year’s highest rated and best-selling action RPG titles. You can find The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt at either Walmart or Target for only $24.99, tor head down to Gamestop where $29.99 will land you the game with an exclusive steelbook case.

Batman Arkham Knight

Xbox One & Playstation 4 $24.99 – Best Buy, Target & Walmart

Where is the Batman? Almost everywhere on Black Friday, as Batman’s latest revenge-fueled romp through Gotham City can be found at three leading retailers for $24.99. If you’re stuck at home washing your tights and miss this low price offering at Best Buy, Target, and Walmart, you’ve got another shot to get this action packed title at Gamestop for $29.99.

Assorted 2016 Sports Titles

Assorted Consoles $27.00 – Walmart

If you’ve got a sports fan on your shopping list, you can score big by heading down to Walmart this Black Friday. There, you’ll find the newest versions of some of the best-selling sports titles for only $27. This includes Madden 16, Fifa 16, and NBA 2k16 for all available systems.

Final Thoughts

As featured in our Dark Horse deals article, Black Friday is also a great time to stock up on gift cards and premium gaming service subscription cards, and nearly every retailer that features console deals also has cards for Xbox Live and Playstation Plus on sale. If the gamer on your list loves to play online multiplayer games, keep in mind that these services are required play online on both Xbox One and Playstation 4.

One final pro-tip for those who are surprising a loved one with a new video game console. Both Xbox Live and Playstation Plus are notorious for slowing to a crawl if not crashing altogether on Christmas. This is because these modern consoles require large software updates right out of the box to add the latest features and software fixes to the console. So when hundreds of thousands of consoles all try to download at once on Christmas morning, the servers become overloaded and make for an agonizing holiday. We highly recommend taking the time to plug in and set up the console before it’s wrapped, making that shiny new console ready to play come Christmas morning.
