Ladies and gentleman, we are almost half way to Black Friday 2015, and the month of April had a couple of news items worth mentioning. Just like we love all our Black Friday Merchants equally, we love all Black Friday news. At the same time we recognize that not every item needs an email blast and social media post. As such, we have decided to just do one post recapping all the Black Friday 2015 news bits from April.
Target's Lilly Pulitzer Launch
With a limited number of popular items from a well known, popular merchant, the launch of Lilly Pulitzer for Target was eerily similar to a Black Friday door buster event. Stock was depleted in a very short time, and people were lined up outside the store. The event did seem to draw the ire of some consumers who were left empty handed, as evidenced by social media commentary. We kept our eye on this event, based on some trends that emerged from last year's Black Friday. You will recall that Sears and Kmart, Walmart, Toys 'R' Us, and Target all had some form of on-line pre-Black Friday sale, and virtually all of our merchants have online Black Friday sales. Add to that Walmart's price matching war with Amazon, and it all points to online shopping being a big, big, BIG part of Black Friday 2015, and we are certainly hoping all of our merchants learned a little bit from the Lilly Pulitzer launch, and that it goes a little more smoothly.
Home Depot Spring Black Friday Sale
Home Depot once again held their Spring Black Friday Sale, extending it into a Spring Cyber Week of Sorts. Spring is of course a major sales period for the home improvement giant. We like to see what sorts of things they try each year, to gain some insight into how our merchants may approach Black Friday. It looks like the trend of Black Friday being a period of days will continue, but after two years of sales starting earlier and earlier, that was a hunch we already had.
Shopko Confirms Thanksgiving Hours
A sort of hybrid news item from a local Fox Affiliate in Wisconsin confirmed that Shopko will be open on Thanksgiving. Given the trend in recent years, and the fact that Shopko opened after dinner last year, this isn't exactly shocking news. We can glean that the semi-compromise of opening after dinner on Thanksgiving will be more popular amongst our merchants than ever before, as will kicking off Black Friday Sales events on Wednesday (or even sooner).
