$399 iPad at TJ Maxx/Marshalls?

Arrival of the iPad: A Look at Apple's Latest ProductWe've received tons of emails from people asking us about the advertised $399 16GB WiFi iPad at TJ Maxx and Marshalls going on now. 5:00pm EST Update: Apparently all iPads at TJ MAxx are sold out.

Apple products are seldom discounted (even during Black Friday); the biggest discounts we've seen from Apple over the past year have been free shipping or free accessories. So when people started telling us that Apple's newest flagship product is retailing for $100 less at discount stores TJ Maxx and Marshalls, we dismissed it as a rumor.

Turns out, it's true. Select TJ Maxx and Marshalls stores are selling the Apple 16GB WiFi iPad 16GB for $399 right now, as confirmed by TJ Maxx's official Twitter account.

Obviously, the next question is will any other stores follow suit and also price the iPad at $100 below retail? The answer is no. TJ Maxx and Marshalls are not official Apple resellers; how they received their iPad supply remains a mystery. In retailer's licensing agreements with Apple, there are clauses that prevent retailers from discounting Apple products below a certain threshold. Break the minimum price and you won't be receiving any more Apple products.

Simply put, this is the best price you see on an Apple iPad this year. TJ Maxx and Marshalls stumbled upon some Apple iPads and are using the $100 discount as a smart/viral way to get more people in their stores. No other retailer is going to risk their relationship with Apple by discounting the iPad much below its retail price of $499.

Remember not every TJ Maxx or Marshalls location is selling the iPad and those that are have a very limited stock; the chances of still finding one in stores is very slim.
