Black Friday 2013 HDTV Buying Guide

39" - 42" HDTVs

The 40-inch category has become so huge this year that we’ve split it up to include more picks. Even after dividing these sets up, there are a whopping 20 HDTVs to choose from in this category. All feature 1080p resolution and LED backlighting.

Our Pick

Westinghouse 39" 1080p 120Hz LED HDTV (UW39T7HW)
$179.99 at Office Depot

Office Depot is our surprise winner this year in the ever-popular 40” category with their Westinghouse 39” HDTV. While they’re not the low-price leader, you’ll get more inputs and better features than Best Buy’s Insignia set for only $10 more. One key spec is that this is the only set under $300 that features a 120hz refresh rate, which will make your fast action sports or movies appear smoother and more fluid compared to other sets in this price range. For under $200, this is a steal, so make sure to line up early for Office Depot’s 8pm Thanksgiving Day opening if you have your eye on this TV.

Runner Up

Insignia 39" 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV (NS-39D40SNA14)
$169.99 at Best Buy

Best Buy boasts the lowest price ever seen in this category with their house brand Insignia 39” LED HDTV. This model features 1 HDMI input, 1 HDMI/DVI shared input, and 1 set of shared component/composite inputs.

Honorable Mention

Element 40” 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV
$178.00 at Walmart

Walmart is back with their ubiquitous special Black Friday sku in the 40” category. Little else is known about the Element 40” set aside from the fact that it is 1080p, 60hz, and goes on sale at 8pm Thanksgiving night. Walmart has not listed the number of HDMI inputs or whether or not this unit has component or composite jacks, so we advise you to check the box and verify that it meets your needs.
