2012 GPS Black Friday Buying Guide

Under $100

This year sports a decent selection of sub-$99 GPS devices from a number of different retailers. At first glance, two Magellan choices, the 5220-LM and 2136T-LM, should win handily with their respective 5” screen and lifetime traffic updates, but generally poor reviews prevented them from taking top pick here.

Our Pick
This Black Friday, you can pick up the Garmin nuvi 40LM from Staples, OfficeMax or Office Depot for $89.99. This 4.3” touch screen GPS includes lifetime map updates, spoken street names and boasts 8 million points of interest. One of the best features is its speed limit indicator, which tells you the speed limit for most roads in the US – a great tool for avoiding tickets when traveling.

Runner Up

Pep Boys has the low cost winner with their $59 Magellan 1424LM, which also includes lifetime map updates. This GPS includes a 4.3” touch screen and built-in AAA Tourbook Guide. While it’s the lowest price among its Black Friday competition, it didn’t take top pick honors due to user reviews that state the green on green map design can be rather difficult for some drivers to read.
