2012 Camcorder Black Friday Buying Guide

The handheld camera is a technology that appears to have been largely marginalized by other forms of tech. Once a luxury item, the price and availability of camcorders has drastically improved with the advent of digital video. That revolution appears to have been short-lived, however, as the rise of the smart phone almost rendered these items obsolete.

Yet the camcorder lives on, thanks in part to its ability to do many things that smart phones can’t (and probably never) will do. Features like optical zoom simply can’t be done on something as small and simple as a smart phone. Additionally, if you plan on recording a large amount of video, a dedicated device is always best since capturing video on a smart phone tends to drain battery life quite fast.

This year’s camcorder selection is a bit slimmer than in years past, but there are still deals to be found, particularly if you’re looking for some advanced features only found on high-end camcorders or if you want an inexpensive device for a youngster to play with. There are also a handful of great value picks if you’re hoping to pick up a small camcorder you can throw in a purse or backpack.
