Under $50 - Vivitar DVR 508

Vivitar DVR 508 - $29.99 at Sears
At Sears, you’ll find the Vivitar DVR508 for a low price of $29.99. This includes 2GB of onboard memory and comes with a 2GB SD card to give you a little more room to work with. This camera also boasts the ability to record at 720p HD at 30fps -- a rarity at this price range -- although we suspect the HD quality will be spotty since it supports only AVI. Digital zoom on this camera is 4x, but keep in mind that digital zoom in any form is a constant trade off: the more you zoom, the more pixilated the picture will become.

The only other camera in this category worth noting is the Vivitar DVR-810 at Office Max for $49.99. It has a bigger LCD than our pick and a higher still picture resolution, but we couldn’t find a single favorable review for the camera. In fact, the reviews are nearly abysmal, so we elected not to have a runner up in this category.
