Target's "Black Friday in July" Sale

Target Black Friday in July

It may be the middle of summer, but there's already some rumblings about Target's "Black Friday in July" sale occurring this Friday, July 15 at 3:00am EST. Target has released a sneak peak of some of the sale's details on their website and will be releasing more information on their Twitter throughout the week. We've compiled a list of known items on our Target Black Friday listing page.

We've never been a fan of using the term "Black Friday" for any other sale, but retailers insist on using Black Friday as a buzz word to drum up interest in run-of-the-mill sales (e.g. Tiger Direct having a "Black Friday" sale the last Friday of every month). At first glance, this sale doesn't appear to buck the trend.

Two of their flagship items, an Xbox 360 4GB w/ 2 Controllers for $199.99 and Philips 32" 1080p LCD HDTV for $299.99 are rather lackluster.

Both Walmart and Best Buy had the Xbox 360 4GB w/ Kinect for $299.99 with a free $100 gift card (essentially the same price) at the end of June. The Kinect retails for around $150 while a controller retails closer to $40.

The Philips 32" 1080p LCD is a good price for a 32" 1080p LCD. While Walmart is selling a similar Sceptre 32" 1080p LCD for $299, Philips is a better recognized brand and the Sceptre is pink in color (although it would pair well with the Disney Princess Musical Keyboard Vanity).

The problem is that many 32" TVs have a resolution of 720p. Why? Because the differences between 720p and 1080p for a 32" TV are almost non-existent unless you plan on using the TV as a monitor or plan on sitting closer than 6' away from it. If we open up the search to 720p TVs, you'll see that NewEgg currently has a Toshiba 32" 720p for $279.99 (use coupon code EMCKCKB59 - expires July 14) and that Sears currently has a Toshiba 32" 720p for $299.99 (see final price during checkout). Additionally, Best Buy had a Sharp 32" 720p TV for $279.99 in late June.

Right now, the sale doesn't look all that impressive. Target may very well have a couple tricks up their sleeves, but if history is any indication, we wouldn't be holding our breath.
